About this Podcast
HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today we're talking with Dr. Jane Smith, an expert in restorative practices in education and the lead instructor for the Postgraduate Certificate in Restorative Practices in Education. Dr. Smith, can you tell us a bit about your personal experiences with restorative practices? GUEST: Absolutely, I've been working in this field for over 20 years, and I've seen firsthand how restorative practices can transform a school community. It's all about building positive relationships and managing conflict effectively to create a safe and inclusive learning environment. HOST: That's wonderful. And what do you think are some current industry trends when it comes to restorative practices in education? GUEST: Well, there's a growing recognition of the importance of social-emotional learning and creating a positive school climate. Restorative practices align well with these trends, and I'm seeing more and more educators seeking out training in this area. HOST: I can imagine that. As with any new approach, I'm sure there are challenges. What do you think are some of the biggest challenges faced in the field or while learning/teaching restorative practices? GUEST: One challenge is that restorative practices require a shift in mindset and culture, which can be difficult and take time. Additionally, implementing restorative practices requires ongoing support and commitment, not just a one-time training. HOST: That makes sense. Looking forward, what do you think the future holds for restorative practices in education? GUEST: I believe restorative practices will continue to grow and become a more integral part of education. As we see increased awareness of the importance of social-emotional learning and creating equitable and harmonious school cultures, restorative practices will be at the forefront of these efforts.
