About this Podcast

HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today I'm thrilled to be talking with an expert in the field of ceramics design. Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got involved in sustainable ceramics? GUEST: Sure, I'm a ceramic artist and educator with over 15 years of experience. I became interested in sustainability after noticing the environmental impact of my own work. This led me to explore eco-friendly materials and techniques, which ultimately shaped my career. HOST: That's fascinating. Sustainability is such a hot topic these days, especially in the design world. Can you share some current trends in sustainable ceramics design that you're excited about? GUEST: Absolutely. One trend is the exploration of locally-sourced clay and natural glazes, which reduces the carbon footprint of ceramic production. Additionally, there's a growing interest in biodegradable and recyclable materials, as well as closed-loop systems in ceramics studios. HOST: It's great to see the industry moving towards more responsible practices. However, I imagine there are still challenges when it comes to implementing sustainable methods. Can you speak to some of those challenges? GUEST: Certainly. Access to sustainable materials can be limited, and they often cost more than traditional supplies. Moreover, many ceramic artists and designers lack the necessary knowledge and skills to implement sustainable practices. This is why education programs like the Professional Certificate in Sustainable Ceramics Design are so important. HOST: That's a great segue. Can you tell us more about this course and what students can expect to learn? GUEST: The Professional Certificate in Sustainable Ceramics Design is a comprehensive program that covers everything from clay sourcing and kiln techniques to glaze formulation and ethical sourcing. Students will develop their design skills, business acumen, and practical skills, all while learning how to create a portfolio of sustainable designs. Our goal is to prepare students to launch their careers in this growing market for eco-conscious products. HOST: That sounds like a fantastic opportunity for aspiring ceramic artists, designers, and entrepreneurs. Lastly, where do you see the future of sustainable ceramics design heading? GUEST: I believe sustainable ceramics design will continue to gain momentum as consumers become more eco-conscious. I expect to see increased innovation in materials, processes, and energy efficiency. The future of ceramics is undoubtedly sustainable, and I'm excited to be a part of it. HOST: Thank you so much for joining us today and sharing your insights on sustainable ceramics design. We're excited to see how this field continues to evolve and the positive impact it will have on our environment. GUEST: My pleasure. Thank you for having me.
