About this Podcast
HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today I'm thrilled to be joined by Dr. Jane Robinson, an expert in robotics for space exploration and the instructor of the Masterclass Certificate in Advanced Robotics for Space Applications. Welcome, Jane! GUEST: Thanks for having me! I'm excited to be here. HOST: So, let's dive right in. Can you tell us about your personal experiences in this field and what inspired you to create this course? GUEST: Of course! I've been working on robotics for space exploration for over 15 years now. My inspiration for this course came from seeing the growing demand for engineers, scientists, and researchers with specialized skills in this area. HOST: Fascinating! And how does the course help learners develop those skills? GUEST: We focus on advanced control systems, autonomous navigation, AI, and machine learning techniques tailored for space robotics. It's very hands-on, with simulations and real-world case studies to give learners practical experience. HOST: That sounds comprehensive! Speaking of which, what current industry trends do you think are most relevant to the course content? GUEST: There are two main trends. First, the increasing focus on sending robotic missions to distant planets and moons, where advanced autonomy is crucial. Second, the use of AI and machine learning to enhance spacecraft capabilities, like on-orbit servicing and satellite maintenance. HOST: Those are some exciting developments! I imagine there must be challenges in teaching and learning such advanced topics. Could you share any insights on that? GUEST: Absolutely. One challenge is keeping up with the rapid pace of technology advancements. We continually update the course content to ensure learners have access to the most recent techniques and tools. For learners, the main challenge is mastering the complex theories and concepts, but we provide ample support and resources to help them succeed. HOST: Well, it's clear that this field is constantly evolving. Finally, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the future of robotics in space exploration. GUEST: I believe we'll see more sophisticated autonomous systems, enabling us to explore challenging environments and even mine asteroids for resources. Additionally, robotics will play a significant role in establishing a human presence on other planets, such as Mars, by building habitats and infrastructure. HOST: Dr. Jane Robinson, thank you so much for sharing your insights and expertise with us today! It's been a pleasure talking to you about the Masterclass Certificate in Advanced Robotics for Space Applications. GUEST: Thank you for having me! It was great discussing the course and the future of robotics in space exploration.
